Who is Eligible to Trek Gorillas in Uganda – Gorilla trekking is an outdoor activity lasting one hour, during which tourists can see gorillas after paying for and acquiring gorilla permits.
Gorillas are gentle giants that display many human-like traits and emotions. They are known to be the closest cousins to humans, sharing 98.3% of their genetic code with us.
These stocky animals have broad chests and shoulders, small eyes, and fearless faces. They are also very friendly and only show aggression if they sense danger.
Uganda is home to half of the world’s endangered mountain gorilla population, making it the country with the highest gorilla population. This gives Uganda a prominent reputation as a gorilla trekking destination.
Uganda offers gorilla permits at a more affordable rate compared to other East African gorilla trekking destinations, attracting both national and international tourists from countries such as the USA, Indonesia, Germany, the UK, China, Italy, and many others.
Uganda has over 18 gorilla families available for trekking, including 17 in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and one in Mgahinga National Park. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is also home to 90 mammal species and 11 primate species, including black-and-white colobus monkeys, adding excitement to the tourism experience.
Persons Eligible and Ineligible to Trek Gorillas in Bwindi
- Persons above the age of 15 are allowed to trek.
- Sick persons are not allowed to trek, as gorillas can easily contract human diseases.
- A maximum of eight people per trek is allowed per day.
Gorilla trekking can be done at any time of the year, but the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are considered the best times. During these months, the dry slopes and trails make it easier to hike through the dense vegetation and steep slopes while searching for gorillas.
In contrast, the wet season tends to have muddy and slippery slopes and trails, making the trek more challenging.
