Nkuringo sector is one of the four sectors in Bwindi and is located in the southern region of Bwindi impenetrable national park.
Nkuringo sector has the major gorilla family that is the Nkuringo gorilla family that was named after ” rolling hills” where it was first sighted .
The gorilla family was launched in 2004 and tourists were allowed to trek.
Nkuringo family comprises of only 12 members in this family that are under going habituation .
The major reason for their habituation is that the individuals of this group were seen destroying crops in people’s gardens.
The Nkuringo family was originally led by the dominant silverback Nkuringo who died in 2008 and later safari and Rafiki but Rafiki was also killed by poachers later on.
Gorilla trekking in Nkuringo requires more physical fitness and good energy being the toughest trail in Bwindi forest .
Nkuringo sector gives amazing views of the Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira of the Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic Of Congo.
Other gorilla families in Nkuringo sector are the Christmas gorilla family with one sliver back called Christmas , 1 black back 3 females and 1 infant totaling to 7 members and Bushao Gorilla family which was formed by a silver back Bahati and has 8 members.
Each day 24 gorilla permits are issued in this sector.

Nkuringo sector can be accessed by road and by air
By road
Nkuringo can be accessed by Kampala -kisoro – Nkuringo route which is approximately 527km travelling for about 11 hours
Travellers from Rwanda can use the Cyanika border in the south which is 5-6 hour drive to kisoro town and then head to Nkuringo.
By Air
Tourists can travel from Entebbe air port or kajjansi air field and connect to kisoro air strip for about 1 to 2 hours .
