Top Luxury Lodges in Ruhija Sector of Bwindi – Ruhija sector is one of the four sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas.
Located in the eastern part of the park, Ruhija has three gorilla groups. The very first gorilla family opened for trekking in July 2008 was the Bitikura gorilla family, which has 14 individuals.
Other gorilla groups include the Kyaguriro gorilla group, a research group where only 6 people (instead of 8) are allowed to trek, and the Oruzongo gorilla group.
Trekking in this sector is easier compared to Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors because the terrain is not as hilly.
Ruhija is also a prime destination for bird watching, with the African Green Broadbill being a major species in the sector.
While Ruhija is not as developed in terms of accommodation facilities as other sectors, new lodges are being constructed yearly to cater to travelers’ needs.

It is located a short distance from the Uganda Wildlife Authority Briefing Point. How to Get to Ruhija
- By Road: Ruhija can be reached by road via the highway from Kampala to Kabale, taking about 8 to 9 hours, and then proceeding to Ruhija. Travelers from Rwanda can access Ruhija through the Cyanika border in about 4 to 5 hours.
- By Air: Tourists can use air transport, which is the fastest and least tiring option. They can land at Kihihi Airstrip from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield.
Luxury lodges in Ruhija are limited, so tourists should book in advance. However, those few available offer the best experience for a gorilla safari in Ruhija.
