The Ivy River Trail is 13 kilometers long and is located in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the Nkuringo sector.
Tourists can hike the trail using 3 different routes:
- From Nkuringo: Tourists will walk 8 kilometers to Nteko Village and then continue 5 kilometers down to Ivy River.
- From Nteko Outpost: Tourists will walk down to the valley and then to Ivy River.
- From Nteko to Buhoma: Tourists will walk down the valley, pass through the jungle, and then enter the Buhoma sector.
The Ivy River Trail takes 4 to 6 hours to hike.
While hiking, tourists will meet the Batwa people and see various animals in the park, such as buffaloes, elephants, wild pigs, mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, duikers, red-tailed monkeys, and giant forest hogs.
The Ivy River Trail is also a paradise for bird watchers. Tourists can see diverse bird species, such as the tiny sunbird, common waxbill, black-billed weaver, cape robin chat, olive woodpecker, Ruwenzori batis, yellow bishop, grey sparrow, and great blue turaco.

About Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, with about 459 individuals—half of the remaining population in the wild.
The park covers an area of 331 square kilometers and has various plant species, animal species, and rivers.
The park is located in southwestern Uganda in the districts of Kabale, Kisoro, and Kanungu.
Bwindi Forest is a tropical rainforest with various wildlife species, such as mammals like duikers, elephants, bushbucks, and chimpanzees. It also has bird species like the black-billed turaco, regal sunbird, Ruwenzori batis, woodpecker, and great blue turaco.
The park is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the body in charge of national parks in Uganda.
Best Time to Visit Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be visited at any time of the year. However, the best time is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February.
During this time, the trail is dry and not muddy, making it easier to hike.
