Gorilla Habituation Permits – Gorilla habituation is a process where mountain gorillas are trained to become accustomed to human presence.
In Uganda, gorilla habituation takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southwestern region of the country, in the districts of Kanungu, Kabale, and Kisoro.
Gorilla habituation is one of the most fascinating activities, as it allows tourists to spend more hours with the mountain gorillas in the wild.
Gorilla habituation is recommended for those who can afford it, as it is expensive. It is also suitable for physically fit and enduring individuals, as it takes about 4 to 7 hours to complete in the wild.
During gorilla habituation, tourists follow the same rules as gorilla trekking and wear the same protective clothing. However, only 4 people are allowed to carry out this activity per gorilla family per day.
Gorilla habituation takes place in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in the southern region of the park.
Gorilla Habituation Permits
A gorilla habituation permit is an authorization that allows tourists to participate in the gorilla habituation experience.
Permits can be secured through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or a trusted tour operator. Tourists are advised to book their permits at least three months before the date of their habituation experience.
Cost of Gorilla Habituation Permits
- USD 1,500 for foreign non-residents
- USD 1,000 for foreign residents
- UGX 750,000 for East African citizens
Gorilla habituation can be done year-round, but the best time is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February.
Gorilla habituation permits are expensive but provide tourists with the opportunity to spend more time with mountain gorillas in their natural jungle environment.
