Mount Sabyinyo derives its name from the local Kinyarwanda word “Iryinyo,” meaning “tooth.” It carries the nickname “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its serrated summit that resembles worn teeth in a gum line.
Mount Sabyinyo is an extinct volcano found in the East African Virunga Mountains and stands as one of the oldest volcanic mountain ranges on the continent, with its slopes providing a great habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorillas.
It is located northeast of Lake Kivu and west of Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. The mountain lies at the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo and holds great religious significance to the local tribes.
Mount Sabyinyo borders Virunga National Park in the DRC, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda.
It rises to an elevation of 3,669 meters (12,037 feet) with a prominence of 1,045 meters (3,428 feet) and is situated at coordinates 01°24’S, 29°36’E.
