Virunga Mountains – Volcanoes, Wildlife & Trekking Adventures

Virunga Mountains – The name “Virunga” comes from the local Kinyarwanda dialect, where “Ibirunga” means “volcanoes” in English.

The Virunga Mountains, also known as Mufumbiro, are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa, covering areas along the borders of three countries: Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda.

The Virunga range is part of the Albertine Rift Mountains, located along the western branch of the East African Rift, between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu.

The Virunga Mountains are home to the largest population of mountain gorillas, providing a critical habitat for these endangered primates, as per the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species.

Mountain gorillas face threats from human activities such as habitat destruction, poaching, disease, and war.

Additionally, the Virunga Mountains house the Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey, situated between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
