Mount Mikeno – The word “Mikeno” is a local word meaning “poor,” which comes from the harsh slopes that make it very dangerous for human habitation.

Mount Mikeno is an extinct volcano located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the Congo section of the Virunga Mountains, along with the rest of the Virunga range.

It is the second-highest peak in the Virunga Mountains after the Karisimbi range, making it the 13th-highest mountain in Africa.

Mount Mikeno stands at an elevation of 4,437 meters (14,557 feet) with a prominence of 1,193 meters (3,914 feet) and is situated at coordinates 1°27’50″S, 29°25’6″E.

It is home to the endangered mountain gorillas, with expeditions to observe them typically departing from the nearby Bukima Patrol Post.
