Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano located in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain is part of the eight Virunga Mountains in the Albertine Rift.
The mountain has erupted about 34 times since 1882, and in 2010, the volcano erupted, claiming about 100 human lives.
Mount Nyiragongo is known for having one of the most voluminous lava lakes in Africa, located at an elevation of about 3,250 meters (10,660 feet).
The ongoing threat at Mount Nyiragongo is carbon dioxide toxicity, locally known as mazuku, which poses a danger, especially to children in the neighboring communities.
Mount Nyiragongo is continuously monitored by the Goma Volcanic Observatory to ensure the safety of people, as the mountain is an active volcano.
The Mount Nyiragongo trek is divided into five sections, and tourists can expect to climb the volcano in about 4 to 6 hours.
- The first section of the trek leads tourists through the thick forests at the base of the mountain, where they may spot wild animals like monkeys and bushbucks.
- The second section offers beautiful views of the valley below.
- The third section takes tourists across old lava flows and volcanic fissures before passing through montane forests, leading to the fourth section.
- The fifth section is a steep 300-meter slope to the summit, where tourists have the opportunity to explore the world’s largest lava lake.

Hiking Mount Nyiragongo is recommended for individuals who are physically fit and do not have any heart complications. At high altitudes, there is a reduction in oxygen, which may affect those with heart conditions.
The minimum age for climbing the mountain is 12 years, and participants must be in good health.

The best time to visit Mount Nyiragongo is during the dry season, from June to August and December to February, as the trails are dry and easier for hiking.
