These walks are facilitated by five different trails that take between 1-8 hours to explore, allowing visitors to enjoy the tranquility of the forest and interact with various species of monkeys. Moreover, there is the added benefit of encountering around 190 different bird species.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has two walking trails between Buhoma and Nkuringo, providing an immersive nature walk experience: the Ivy River Trail and the Kashasha Trail.

It’s also worth noting that during the nature walks, visitors can experience the Batwa cultural tour and the Munyaga River Trail.

A Brief of Forest Walks in Various Places

  • The Munyaga Walk: This hike leads through the forest to the scenic Munyaga Waterfalls. Safety and guidance are provided by a well-trained local guide, who also offers lessons about the different flora and fauna in the forest and their benefits.
  • The Lake Mutanda Nature Walk: This forest walk begins in Buhoma and passes through Nkuringo, culminating in the stunning Lake Mutanda.
  • The Batwa Experience: Led by a local guide called a Mutwa, this walk through the Batwa community offers various cultural insights. The Batwa people are considered the original forest dwellers of Bwindi, having lived among the trees for generations. They were also skilled hunters. The walk concludes with entertainment and interaction with the Batwa community.
  • The Kashasha Trail: The Kashasha Trail is the shortest and most direct trail through the forest, stretching about 13 km. It begins at Nkuringo Park Office and descends a steep slope through community land to the park’s buffer zone. The trail crosses various rivers and connects to other trails, including the Ivy River Trail. This trail offers the chance to experience the beauty of the rain-forest, including birds and different monkey species.
  • The Ivy River Trail: This trail takes approximately 6.5 hours and includes a 7 km walk along a murram road with the rain-forest on the right and the river on the left. As the trail winds deeper into the forest, visitors can spot a variety of wildlife, including duikers, birds, colorful butterflies, and monkeys.
