The park is home to more than half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, which live in its four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga.

Bwindi is a tropical rainforest with an annual temperature range of 7–15°C minimum and 20–27°C maximum. The park also receives very heavy rainfall throughout the year, ranging from 1,400 mm to 1,900 mm.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west and Kabale to the southwest.

The park covers an area of 331 sq. km in the highest parts of the Kigezi Highlands.

Bwindi is home to other wildlife species, including mammals such as forest elephants, bush babies, and buffaloes; primates such as blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and chimpanzees; and birds such as the blue-headed sunbird, mountain masked apalis, strange weaver, regal sunbird, and crowned hornbill.

Bwindi is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the body responsible for tourist activities in the park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park can be visited all year round; however, the best time is during the dry season in the months of June to August and December to February.
During the dry season, forest trails are dry, making it easier to access the park.
