Lake Mulehe
Lake Mulehe is located in southwestern Uganda particularly in Kisoro district.
The lake was formed due to volcanicity and covers an area of 2 square kilometers and 14 km wide .
Lake Mulehe is a habitat to a small population of wildlife species such as birds which include; kites , kingfishers, hadaba ibis and grey crowned crane etc., mammals such as African clawless otter , side necked turtle, bush backs , Duikers , African civet , fish like Nile tilapia , African cat fish , lung fish and mud fish , Reptile and amphibians like African rock python , green mamba , frogs among others.
Lake Mulehe is also surrounded by diverse ethnic groups which are Bakiga , Bafumbira and the Batwa people.
Activities at Lake Mulehe
- Boat cruise
Boat cruise enables tourists to tour around the lake as they watch the wildlife species like birds and as well feel the cold breeze on the lake .
Boat cruise can take about 3hours and this offers a better experience for tourists.
- Fishing
Fishing is a fascinating activity as tourists will be guided by local fishermen to the best spots to fish . Fish include tilapia , lung fish , catfish , and mud fish and these will be fished using hooks and baskets.
- Birding
Lake Mulehe is a birders paradise and these birds can be spotted during boat cruise or canoeing on the lake . Bird species include ; grey crowned crane , hadaba ibis , kingfisher and kites among others.
- Cultural encounters
Lake Mulehe is surrounded by various local people like the Batwa , Bakiga and Bafumbira . Tourists will get chance to tour their communities and explore and learn their different cultures and traditions , way of building , hunting , cooking , making hand craft among others .
- Hiking
Lake Mulehe is surrounded by hills such as the kigezi hills and tourists will have chance to hike at the highest altitudes and this gives then beautiful views of the surrounding .
How to Access Lake Mulehe
By road
Tourists will travel from Kampala and head to Kisoro district using a car. They will travel for about 9 to 10 hours covering a distance of about 454 km. The journey by road is interesting as tourists have chance to explore other beautiful sceneries in the country.
By air
Tourists will travel from Entebbe International Airport or kajjansi air field to Kisoro airstrip and then continue by road up to lake Mulehe.
