Kisoro town is located in South western region of Uganda in kisoro district and in the sub region of Kigezi .

Kisoro is 76 km west of kabale and about 484 km from Kampala the capital city of Uganda by road. The geographical coordinates of kisoro are 1°17’06. “S , 29°41’06.0” E

Kisoro town is found under the peaks of Mountain Mufumbiro which is part of the Virunga mountains . It also has one of the most beautiful scenery like mountains , lake Mutanda and forests.

Kisoro town is an access to Bwindi impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga national park the homes of the endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda and as well those travelling to Volcanoes national park in Rwanda from Uganda and Virunga national park in Democratic Republic of Congo.

 

Common means of transport to kisoro town are buses or coaches

Most of these buses travel from Kampala to kisoro and they are jaguar , Bismarkan , Horizon and Post Bus among others.

 

How to access Kisoro town

By Road

Tourists heading to kisoro will travel by car from Kampala -kisoro and the journey is approximately 484km and it takes about 8 to 10 hours .

Tourists travelling by road have chance to view different wildlife species like birds among others.

 

By Air

Tourists travelling by air will take a flight from Entebbe international airport or kajjansi air field to kisoro air strip . The flight takes about 1 hour and the rest of the journey to kisoro town is by road.

 

Tourist attractions around Kisoro town

1.Mountain gorillas

The mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks . Bwindi has over 20 gorillas families while Mgahinga has 1 gorilla family and all are open for trekking .

Tourists will need to secure their gorilla permits to gain access to the park and trek gorillas .

The best time to trek is in the dry season in the months of June to September and December to January.

 

  1. Golden monkeys

Golden monkeys are found in Mgahinga National park in Uganda and tourists will have to secure their permits to trek the golden monkeys .

These can be trekked after a gorilla trekking experience in the park . Tourists will have chance to spot other wildlife species like the birds in the wilderness.
