Kanungu is a district located in the western part of Uganda, in the Kigezi subregion. It serves as a gateway to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Kanungu was originally part of Kabale District but became a separate district in 2001. Today, Kanungu is a hub for recreational activities due to the impact of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Bwindi Forest is even featured in the aerial footage of the movie Black Panther.
The district is located at coordinates 00°57’S 29°47’E, with an estimated total population of 252,100 and a population density of 197.9 people per square kilometer (513/sq mi). It follows the UTC+3 (EAT) time zone.
Kanungu is home to the Bahororo and Bakiga people, who are predominantly farmers, growing crops like tea, coffee, and bananas.
The Bahororo have a rich and interesting cultural background. They are a small nomadic Bantu tribe whose origins trace back to the Cush Kingdom in modern-day Ethiopia. They are closely related to the Tutsi of Rwanda and place high value on cattle.
The district has two main tea factories, Kigezi Development Tea Factory and Kayonza Tea Factory, which visitors can tour to see how tea is processed from the garden to the cup.
Kanungu is also known for producing some of the world’s best tea at an affordable price.

- Kanungu is associated with a tragic event involving Joseph Kibwetere, who in 2000 led over 30,000 followers in a cult. Based on his prophecy about the end of the world, over 1,000 members of his church were burned in a mass killing under the “Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God.”

Kanungu can be visited any time of the year. However, the dry season is preferred, as roads to the park are more accessible, and hiking trails are less muddy and slippery.
