Kanungu

 

Kanungu is a great district found in western part of Uganda in Kigezi subregion and a gateway to Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park .

 

Kanungu was originally a part of kabale district however , it was made a separate district in 2001

 

Apparently, Kanungu is home to recreational activities due to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s effect as Bwindi Impenetrable forest is among the sites captured and revealed in the aerial footage in the movie “black panther”

 

The district coordinates at 00°57’S29°47’E with an estimated total population of 252,100 and a population density of 197.9 square kilometers that is 513/sqmi with a UTC+3(EAT)

 

Kanungu is home to Bahororo and Bakugan that are predominantly farmers growing majorly tea , coffee and bananas.

 

The inhabitants are of a very rich and interesting cultural background for example the Bahororo are a small nomadic Bantu tribe whose origins trace up to the Cush Kingdom modern day Ethiopia . They also have a close relation to the Tutsi of Rwanda with high value of cattle .

 

The district has two main tea factories that is Kigezi Development Tea factory and Kayonza Tea factory that can be toured by visitors and have a look at how tea is processed from the garden to the cup.

 

Importantly, kanungu is also one of the world’s districts with the best tea at an affordable price .

 

Brief facts about Kanungu.

It’s town is not highly developed and has one of the best scenic views with views of plantations along the way giving the most mind blowing dive into the Traditional African culture and pays close attention to the interconnection between nature and humans.

 

It also identifies with a tragic story of Kibwetere Joseph who in 2000 led over 30,000 followers and based on his end of the world prophesy around March of that year burnt over 1000 members of his church in the restoration of the ten commandments of God in mass killing

Best time to visit

kanungu can be visited any time of the year.  However dry season would be preferably better when roads to the park are easily accessible and hiking trails less muddy and slippery
