Kabale Town is located in the southwestern region of Uganda, and it is the main town of Kabale District. Kabale Town is nicknamed “Ka Stone,” a local word in the Rukiga language, meaning a small stone.
The town is 142 km from Mbarara, the largest city in western Uganda, and approximately 410 km from Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, by road.
Kabale Town is near the Katuna border and neighbors the districts of Ntungamo, Kisoro, and Rukungiri. The town is well-known for its beautiful scenery, including hills, lakes, and forests.
In 1980, Kabale District was given a new name after being part of the former Kigezi District.
Tourist Attractions in Kabale Town
Lake Bunyonyi: The name “Bunyonyi” means “a place with little birds” because of the many bird species found around the lake. Lake Bunyonyi has 29 islands, including Bushara, Njuyeera, and Bwama, among others. The main economic activities around the lake are fishing and farming.
Kisiizi Waterfalls: Kisiizi Waterfalls are located on the Kyabamba River in Kisiizi Village. This place offers stunning scenery and is perfect for relaxation.
Mountain Gorillas: Mountain gorillas are found in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park. These two national parks can be visited throughout the year, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. Bwindi has over 21 gorilla families open for trekking, while Mgahinga National Park has one gorilla family. A gorilla permit costs about USD 800 in Uganda.
How to Access Kabale Town
- By Road: Travelers coming from Kampala can take the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara-Kabale route. The distance is about 410 km, and the journey takes 8 to 10 hours.
- By Air: Travelers can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip. From there, they can use a car to reach Kabale Town.
