Drones in Bwindi – In Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a new technology has been developed and is now flying in the skies of the park. These are drones. Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that fly in the air while capturing images and videos.
Drones are very important in the areas of conservation and tourism. However, the use of drones in Bwindi is monitored, and strict rules and regulations are in place.
Tourists or conservationists who want to use drones in Bwindi will need permission from the relevant authorities, such as the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
For tourists bringing drones from abroad, they must apply for a permit through the Civil Aviation Authority and also get clearance from the Uganda Defense Forces.
This is done to ensure that the drones are safe and intended for conservation and tourism purposes. Originally, drones were used for spying.
It is important to note that tourists need to apply for a drone permit at least one month before arriving in Bwindi. A small fee is charged for this.
Some of the activities drones can be used for include:
Gorilla Filming
Gorilla filming is the activity of capturing images and videos of the endangered mountain gorillas.
Using drones helps filmmakers capture stunning aerial images and videos of mountain gorillas as they interact with their environment.
This can be done without disturbing the animals, unlike when humans are physically present.
Anti-Poaching Efforts
Drones are an easy way to patrol the park and its edges. They help detect any illegal activities, such as poaching.
Habitat Monitoring
Drones can be used to capture images and videos. Scientists use these to track changes in the park, spot deforestation, and detect wildfires.
Laws Governing the Use of Drones in Bwindi
- Drones should not be flown above people who are not part of your photo shoot.

Drones play an increasingly important role in conservation and tourism. They provide access to areas of the park that are hard to reach.
