The Bushaho gorilla group is located in the Nkuringo region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and is one of the few groups trekked in this sector.
The Bushaho gorilla group was formed in 2012 when some individuals broke away from the Nkuringo gorilla family.
It was led by a determined silverback named Bahati, who currently leads the group.
The Bushaho gorilla group currently consists of 11 members, including 1 silverback, 3 infants, and 2 sub-adults.
The group has undergone gorilla habituation, meaning its members have been trained to become accustomed to human presence.
Trekking the Bushaho Gorilla Group
Trekking the Bushaho gorilla group starts early in the morning at 7 a.m. at the Nkuringo Park Headquarters, with a briefing about the trekking rules.
Tourists are grouped into teams of eight and are led by a well-trained park ranger to trek and locate the mountain gorillas.
Trekking this group can take between 2 to 7 hours in the wilderness, and once the gorillas are spotted, the park ranger allows tourists to spend only 1 hour with them.
Cost of Bushaho Gorilla Permits
- USD 800 for foreign non-residents
- USD 700 for foreign residents
- UGX 300,000 for East African citizens
Gorilla permits can be obtained through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, or tourists can use a trusted tour operator to secure the permits on their behalf.
The Bushaho gorilla group can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the dry season, from June to September and December to February.
During these months, there is little rainfall, meaning the slopes are not muddy, making trekking easier.
The Bushaho gorilla group is a friendly group and serves as a testament to the power of conservation efforts in Uganda.
