5-Day Congo Gorilla Tour: Lowland, Mountain Gorillas & Nyiragongo

Please see the detailed itinerary of this 5-Day Congo gorilla tour below:

Day 1: Transfer to Bukavu – DR Congo

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, you will be picked up by our company representative and embark on an adventurous drive southward, taking in the beautiful green countryside of Rwanda.

We will proceed to the Cyangugu border, continuing to Bukavu, DR Congo.

Lunch will be at Butale Ibis Hotel, and depending on the time, we may visit some scenic spots along the Nyungwe road.

After crossing the border, we will check in at our accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Trekking and Transfer to Goma

Today, you’ll experience a different species of gorillas—Lowland Gorillas. After an early breakfast, we will drive to Kahuzi Biega National Park for our Lowland Gorilla trekking experience, a journey that takes about an hour depending on our speed.

Upon arrival at the park headquarters, we will attend a short briefing and be entertained by a local cultural dance.

This meeting is crucial for learning the rules and guidelines for gorilla trekking, so feel free to ask any questions.

Afterward, we will venture into the jungles of Kahuzi Biega for the Lowland Gorilla trekking adventure, enjoying up to an hour of close contact with these gorillas once we locate them.

What’s special about Lowland Gorilla Trekking? Unlike Mountain Gorillas, Lowland Gorillas live in larger families, making this a unique and memorable experience.

After the trek, we will head to the Ihusi Boat Centre to catch the ferry to Goma, where we will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

After a hearty breakfast, we will drive for about an hour to Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for our Mountain Gorilla Trekking adventure.

Upon arrival at the Bukima park headquarters, we will attend a short briefing on the dos and don’ts of gorilla trekking, as well as safety tips.

We will then be assigned to different gorilla groups and embark on our trek into the Virunga jungles to search for these gentle primates.

The trek will last between 2-6 hours, including a full hour of close interaction with the gorillas. After the trek, we will return to our lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Mount Nyiragongo Hike

Day 4 is a highlight—a challenging climb up one of Africa’s greatest volcanic mountains, Mount Nyiragongo.

After breakfast, we will drive to Kibati, the starting point for the hike, under the protection of an armed ranger.

This adventure takes about 6-7 hours, depending on the pace of the group, so it’s important to be in good physical condition.

Once we reach the top of the volcano, we will descend slightly for dinner and an overnight stay near the summit.

Day 5: Descend to Goma – Rwanda

In the morning, we will descend from the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, arriving back at Kibati around noon.

We will then drive to Goma for a lunch break before transferring to Gisenyi as we continue our journey back to Kigali.

This drive will take approximately 4 hours, assuming an average speed of 60 kilometers per hour. You will be dropped off at a hotel in Kigali for an overnight stay or at Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
