Detailed 5-Day Virunga Nyiragongo Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Lake Kivu
After having your early morning breakfast, our guide will arrive to pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Gisenyi, driving through Musanze (formerly called Ruhengeri).
During the long drive to Gisenyi, you may opt for an optional cultural trail at Iby’iwachu Village if time and budget allow.
Upon your arrival in Gisenyi, enjoy a brief boat cruise on Lake Kivu, exploring some of its historic islands.
Day 2: Ascend Mount Nyiragongo
Wake up for an early morning breakfast and then embark on a five- to six-hour adventurous climb to the beautiful yet dangerous crater of Mount Nyiragongo.
This physically challenging hike should take you approximately five hours, depending on factors such as fitness level, speed, and agility.
It may take less time if you push yourself.
Day 3: Descend Mount Nyiragongo
Start your day with a hearty early morning breakfast and prepare for the descent of the volcano.
Upon reaching the starting point, you will transfer immediately to Goma town for dinner and an overnight stay, as you prepare for the mountain gorilla tracking adventure the following day.
Day 4: Mountain Gorilla Trekking
This day requires an early rise to get organized, have a substantial breakfast, and arrive at the park offices before 7:30 AM for a briefing about Mountain Gorilla tracking in Virunga National Park.
After the briefing, you will begin your trek into the Virunga Conservation Area in search of the endangered Mountain Gorillas.
The activity can last between 2 to 8 hours, depending on your luck, including a full hour spent with the primates. After the trek, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 5: Transfer to Kigali, City Tour, and Departure
On this final day, you will journey back to Kigali, Rwanda, for an exciting city tour, exploring some of Kigali’s great landmarks.
Later, transfer to the airport for a late drop-off or an overnight stay at your preferred accommodation within the city.
