Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of the Eastern gorilla and they inhabit the tropical rainforests of three countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo.
The mountain gorillas are found in the national parks of Bwindi impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mountain gorillas are one if the most endangered primates and they total to about 1063 individuals in the wild . There numbers are highly affected by diseases, habitat destruction and powching.
Mountain gorillas habit highland areas ranging in elevations of between 2200m to 4300m in the Virungs mountains.
The great apes live in families or groups of between 4 to 30 members and headed by a dominant silverback . The dominant silverback is responsible for leading the family , making all decisions for the family , protecting the members and mating with the females in the family.
The mountain gorillas feed on vegetation like leaves , shoots , roots, bamboo , fresh fruits which makes them herbivorous animals . Males eat on average about 30kg of vegetation per day whereas females eat about 18kg of vegetation per day.
Mountain gorillas usually communicate through the different vocalizations that they make such as grunts, barks , screams , roars .
The localizations are made for warning like roars and others during social interactions with group members.
Mountain gorillas are physically distinguished because of the thick fur they possess on their bodies , nose prints which are unique to each member.
The Adult males usually stand at an height of about 171cm and adult females at an height of 160cm.
Do gorillas drink water
Mountain gorillas unlike other wild animals in the forest do not drink water . This is because mist of their day is spent eating verdant vegetation which contains moisture and morning dee they need .
Males usually eat up to 30kg of vegetation which comprises of stems , leaves , shoots , roots and fresh fruits and all these contain sufficient water.
Best time to visit mountain gorillas
The best time to visit mountain gorillas is in the dry season when passages are dry in the months of of June to September and December to February . However mountain gorillas can also be visited in other seasons of the year.
In conclusion , mountain gorillas don’t drink water but the vegetation they eat contains all the water they need for their bodies thus more hydration .
