Katuna Border – Key Trade Gateway Between Uganda and Rwanda

Katuna Border – Key Trade Gateway Between Uganda and Rwanda

Katuna Border is located in Katuna Town, the last town in Uganda before entering Rwanda, in Kabale District, southwestern Uganda. It lies on the 500 km Mombasa-Kigali Highway from Kampala city.

Situated at the border between Uganda and Rwanda, Katuna Border serves as a major spot for international trade, acting as a key entry and exit point for exports and imports between the two countries.

The border operates 24/7 to ensure smooth business operations and efficient trade activities.

It should be noted that Katuna Border and its town originally belonged to Belgian Rwanda and served as a key exit point for political refugees fleeing to safety in Uganda.

However, after the British demarcation of the Uganda-Rwanda border and an agreement between the Belgian and British governments, Katuna officially became part of Uganda, making it the last town of the latter.

Katuna Border hosts a diverse group of people from various nationalities, such as Congolese, Rwandese, Ugandans, and Burundians.

This diversity influenced the establishment of the immigration post and police post, where all tribes are represented.

The economically organized area has a population of over 300 people.

It is important to note that the area’s steep terrain makes building difficult and expensive.
