Diamox – Diamox is a medicine used to overcome the symptoms of altitude sickness. Diamox was manufactured by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries from Israel and was approved in July 1953.
This medicine decreases headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath, which are the main symptoms of altitude sickness caused when one climbs high at an altitude of 3000m above sea level.
This medicine belongs to a class of drugs known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. Diamox can work less well over time, so it is used only for a short period and has also been used with other medications to treat certain types of seizures.
How Diamox Tablet is Used
The tablet is taken by swallowing it as directed by the doctor, usually 1 to 2 times daily. One must swallow the tablet whole because breaking or chewing may reduce its long-term action and increase side effects.
Diamox can be taken with or without food, and one must take plenty of fluids. Dosage is based on one’s medical condition. One is advised to take Diamox 1 to 2 days before climbing to a higher altitude.
In case you are treating another condition, such as glaucoma or seizures, take the drug as directed by medical personnel.
Side Effects
One may experience dizziness, light-headedness, and sometimes increased urination, especially during the first few days after taking the drug. Other side effects include blurred vision, dry mouth, drowsiness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in taste.
