Crime Rate in Bwindi – Bwindi is one of the safest places to go gorilla trekking, as the Ugandan government has increased security and resettled all people who previously lived on the park premises.
This ensures that tourists engaging in various activities are kept safe within the park.
Some tourists may base their concerns on the 1998 Bwindi massacre, where Rwandan Hutu rebels attacked Bwindi and killed over eight tourists from the USA, the UK, and other countries, as well as the killing of the dominant silverback Rafiki, the leader of the Nkuringo gorilla family, by poachers.
However, tourists should understand that the government has significantly invested in the park’s security.
During gorilla trekking, tourists are accompanied by two well-armed park rangers and tourist police to protect them from outsiders and dangerous wildlife.
Safety Precautions
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, tourists must follow the rules and regulations that govern the park.
If an area is designated as off-limits, tourists should refrain from approaching it.
- Tourists should not visit the park without the guidance of park rangers or tour guides.
- Tourists should avoid getting out of their vehicles during game drives unless instructed to do so by a guide.
Bwindi is a safe and favorable destination for all tourists. The government, in partnership with other organizations, has implemented effective security measures to ensure the safety of all visitors.
