Charity Organizations Supporting Bwindi – Community Initiatives

Charity Organizations in Bwindi – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the leading tourist destinations in Uganda and a major source of revenue for the government.

However, the local community continues to face challenges such as poverty, poor living standards, health concerns, and illiteracy.

The interaction between tourists and the local communities has exposed the region to the world, leading to the involvement of various charitable organizations that aim to improve the quality of life for the people of Bwindi.

Some of these organizations include:

Bwindi Eco Children’s Home

Founded by Francis Byamukama in 2013, Bwindi Eco Children’s Home was inspired by Francis’s humble background, which was uplifted through education.

He began his career as a grade three teacher and later pursued a bachelor’s degree in social work and administration.

This success enabled him to support children from similar backgrounds by providing them with access to education.

Thanks to the support of others, the home now provides full-time residential care to over 60 orphans and offers education to more than 400 children in Bwindi, with significant success.

Change a Life Bwindi

This organization aims to empower and uplift the people around the Ruhija sector, helping them overcome poverty and build a secure and sustainable future for themselves and their surrounding environment, including Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

Ride for a Woman Bwindi

Ride for a Woman is a charitable organization focused on empowering women and girls. It aims to help them escape the cycles of poverty and domestic violence and supports those suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Friends of Education

Friends of Education is a charity organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in the communities surrounding Bwindi.

The Kellerman Foundation

Founded in 2004 by Dr. Scot Kellerman, a California-based family physician and tropical medicine specialist, and his wife Carol Scot, this organization was established after their visit to Uganda in 2000.

The Kellermans, through their Episcopal medical missions, assessed the needs of the Batwa people living near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

They developed a strong relationship with the local community, learning their language, sharing their experiences, and spreading the gospel. They also built homes for the Batwa.

The foundation started its mission under a tree, where they treated 200-300 people. Over time, they built a clinic, which has since grown into one of the largest hospitals in the country, Bwindi Community Hospital.

The collective efforts of the various charity organizations in Bwindi have significantly improved the living standards of the people living around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, bringing hope and development to the region.
