Christmas Gorilla Group – Meet Bwindi’s Unique Gorilla Family

The Christmas Gorilla family is led by a dominant silverback called Christmas, from whom the group’s name is derived.

He is called Christmas because he was born on Christmas Day.

The Christmas Gorilla Group is one of the friendliest and most amazing groups and is among the newly habituated families found in the Nkuringo sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which lies in the southern part of Bwindi.

This became an added advantage, as the habituation of the Christmas Gorilla Group increased the number of gorilla permits available for trekking in the Nkuringo sector.

Initially, only two gorilla families were habituated for trekking. After the formation of the Christmas group, the number of families increased to three, raising the number of permits issued from 16 to 24 per day.

It should be noted that only 8 gorilla permits are issued per family per day, and trekking time is limited to one hour.

The Christmas Gorilla family consists of 9 members, including a dominant silverback, a blackback, 3 females, and an infant.

More individuals are expected to join the group over time.

It should be noted that the Christmas Gorilla Group separated from the Nkuringo Gorilla Group, which was the first to be habituated.

After the split, due to the increased demand for more gorilla permits in the Nkuringo sector, the group quickly became available for trekking, as no further habituation was necessary.
