This 6 Days Volcanoes & Akagera National Park safari highlights Gorilla tracking, Golden Monkey tracking, a visit to the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera, a visit to the ancient Musaze Caves, a wildlife viewing experience in Akagera National Park that should earn us sight of the big five game animals along with a boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Please read detailed itinerary below.

Day 1: Arrival & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Upon your arrival, one of our company representatives will be already waiting for you at Kigali International Airport. We shall then transfer straight to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri whilst briefing you about Rwanda and instilling you with safety information such as precautions to take and the likes. Please, our guides are very knowledgeable and experienced hence, feel free to ask them any questions and rest be assured that you will receive perfect answers for your questions. The journey to Ruhengeri is about 2 – 3 hours implicating if our arrival is a bit earlier, we shall have enough time for an evening walk around the local communities.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Twin Lakes Visit

After a heavy breakfast meal, we shall head to the park headquarters in Kinigi for a short briefing meeting before we head out to the jungles of Volcanoes National Park for our mountain gorilla trekking experience. You are required to carry packed lunch and lots of drinks before there are no shops in the jungles where you will be able to purchase them if needed. The gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park is very awesome and should last between 2 hours to 8 hours depending on how the mountain gorillas move. You will have a full hour of an encounter with these primates where you will take photographs, interact with them, before returning to our starting point for your respective gorilla tracking certificate. In the evening or late afternoon, you will visit Rwanda’s twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo whilst having sights of the local community projects. After this, we shall head back to our place of stay for dinner and an overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey tracking and Musaze Caves Walk

After having our breakfast, you will embark on another exciting primates activity, Golden Monkey Tracking that should commence at 7am from the park headquarters in Kinigi with any available number of people. The Rwanda golden monkey tracking experience lasts to a maximum of 4 hours including one full hour on a close encounter. From here we shall head for a walk in the historic cave of Musaze that is estimated to have been formed about 65 Million years ago by the basalt lava flow from the Volcanic Mountains of Sabyinyo and Bisoke. The caves features approximately 31 entrances and stretches up to about 2 kilometers deep inside. This underground walk should last for a maximum of two hours under the protection of an armed soldier for safety and security. After this activity, we shall retire for relaxation, dinner and overnight as we prepare for our journey to Akagera National Park the following day.

Day 4: Transfer to Akagera National Park

After having breakfast, we shall transfer to Akagera National Park whilst driving through the beautiful countryside landscapes of Rwanda before making a stop in Kigali City for a lunch meal. After having out lunch, we shall then proceed to our next destination, Akagera National Park (about 130 kilometers away) where we should reach in the evening for relaxation, dinner and an overnight.

Day 5: Morning Game Drive & Afternoon Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema

After an early morning breakfast, we shall drive through the Savannah plains of Akagera National Park as we search for wildlife. Akagera National Park shelters variety of wild game animals among including the African Elephants, Masai giraffes, Cape Buffaloes, Impalas, bushbucks, Lions, Oribi, eland, reedbucks, roan antelopes, leopards along with other species of wildlife. Following the recent introduction of Rhinos in Akagera National Park, Rwanda officially has the big five game animals (Elephants, Leopards, Lions, Cape Buffaloes and Rhinoceros) which we should all see luckily before winding up our game drive. After this exciting activity, we shall head back to the lodge for relaxation and lunch then visit the second largest lake in Rwanda, Lake Ihema in the afternoon where we shall have sights of crocodiles, hippopotamuses, birds plus more wildlife. After the cruise, we shall head back to our place of stay for dinner and an overnight as we prepare for the last day of our safari.

Day 6: Transfer to Kigali, visit the Genocide Memorial Monument and Departure

After having our breakfast, we shall embark on a journey back to Kigali City where we shall pay tribute to the thousands of Rwandeese that succumbed to the bloody genocide of 1994, whose remains lie in the Gisozi genocide memorial monument. After this sad visit, we shall mark the end of the safari by dropping you off to Kigali International Airport for your departure or at your hotel around Kigali.
