Lake Mutanda is located in kisoro district in south western Uganda

The lake covers an area of about 29 sq km and then the maximum depth is 56m

The lake is found at an altitude of 1800m in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain tanges ie Mount Muhabura , Mount Sabyinyo and Mount Gahinga

Lake Mutanda is a fresh water lake having 15 small islands with vegetation thus acting as habitats to small animals

The biggest island on lake mutanda is called Mutanda island habited by Abageresa clan . These people carryout activities like crop growing dealing in crops such as bananas , peas , sugar canes etc

Other islands are punishment islands where criminals and pregnant girls were taken as a punishment and the python island which is a home to pythons

Lake Mutanda has few bird species due to the cold conditions around around the lake

Bird species include ; Pain tailed whydah , Great cormorant , sun birds and Pied kingfisher

Lake Mutanda will be accessed by road from Kampala and the entire journey takes about 9 to 10 hours covering a distance of 454 km . Tourists will travel along the kampala -Masaka – Mbarara to kabale to kisoro

 

By Air

Tourists will book a flight from Entebbe International Airport or kajjansi air field to kisoro air strip and will fly for about an hour .
