Katwe Gorilla Group – The Katwe Gorilla family is found in the Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Buhoma is the oldest and one of the most famous sectors in the northern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The group’s name, “Katwe,” comes from a hill in the region where the group members feed and were habituated, called Katwe.
The Katwe Gorilla Group consists of 9 members, though the number is subject to change due to new births or members leaving the group.
These nine members include:
- One dominant silverback
- Four adult females
- Three blackbacks
- Two infants
What Katwe Gorilla Family Members Feed On
- Foliage
- Stems
- Roots
- Bamboo shoots
- Occasionally insects
- Infants feed on breast milk before they learn to pick food
Best Time to Visit the Katwe Gorilla Family
The Katwe gorilla family can be visited at any time of the year. However, the dry season, between June to September and December to February, is the best time to visit.
Gorilla Do’s and Don’ts
- Wash hands before trekking
- Attend the pre-trekking briefing
- Do not litter the park
- Keep noise levels low
- Properly dispose of human waste
- Do not feed the gorillas
- Keep voices low
- Look aside and avoid making direct eye contact with gorillas
- Spend a maximum of one hour with the gorillas
- Do not use flash photography
- Stay at least 7 meters away from the gorillas
